Venom Program

Celebrating Over 70 Years of Saving Lives

The Australian Reptile Park’s venom program has been a critical part of saving Australian lives for over 70 years, being the sole supplier of venom for anti-venom production for terrestrial venomous snakes. Since its inception, the program has saved more than 25,000 lives. The Park milks over 250 venomous snakes using specialized techniques, carefully collecting venom for anti-venom production. In addition to snake venom, the Park also plays a significant role in funnel-web spider anti-venom, housing over 2,000 spiders and provides venom to Seqiris for life-saving treatments. The Weigel Venom Centre, a state-of-the-art venom facility, further enhances this vital work, allowing visitors to see the process behind venom extraction and anti-venom creation.

The venom collected from snakes and spiders is essential for treating bites, with the anti-venom saving an estimated 300 lives in Australia each year. The Park’s funnel web venom program has contributed to zero deaths from spider bites since 1981. The Australian Reptile Park’s venom program continues to lead innovation in wildlife conservation, science, and public safety, offering an opportunity for visitors to learn about the critical role it plays in venom research and the protection of Australians from venomous species.
