Description
The spotted black snake is also known as the blue-bellied black snake and is a venomous snake endemic to Australia. It can be variable in colour ranging from uniform black above, through to various degrees of spotting. Its underside can be grey or blue-grey and can reach a total length of 1.5m.
Habitat
The species can be found in a range of habitats from rocky hillsides to black soil river floodplains and rich coastal forest. Its distribution is in eastern Australia from south-eastern Queensland along western slopes and plains of northern New South Wales. It extends almost to the New South Wales coast through the Hunter River Valley.
Diet
The spotted black snake feeds on small reptiles, mammals and frogs.
Reproduction
The spotted black snake produces anywhere between 7-13 eggs in a clutch and female lay their eggs in the spring.
