Life Saving Venom Facility Opens

Date Published: December 12, 2024

The Australian Reptile Park is proud to announce the grand opening of its new venom milking facility, the ‘Weigel Venom Centre,’ named in honour of park owners John and Robyn Weigel, who revolutionised the venom program in the 1980s. This groundbreaking facility will produce life-saving antivenom from terrestrial snake venom, estimated to save 300 lives per year. The park is the only facility in Australia to milk terrestrial snakes for antivenom production.

Visitors will gain unique insights into the venom collection and production process, along with interactive and informative exhibits detailing the history of venomous snakes in Australia. This immersive experience underscores the park's commitment to saving lives and its significant contribution to the local economy through tourism.

"It’s been a long time in the making, and we are thrilled to finally be opening this historic venom facility," said Tim Faulkner, Director of Australian Reptile Park. "The new facility will allow us to continue to produce life-saving venom, while also providing visitors with an engaging and educational experience. It's amazing to think that the venom of these creatures, which can be so deadly, can also be the key to snakebite treatment."

The project was partially funded by a $300,000 grant from NSW Health and the Liberal Government. The Australian Reptile Park is excited to welcome visitors to learn about the importance of antivenom in treating snake bites.

Mr. Faulkner continued, “Together, with The Australian Reptile Park’s venom, and CSL Seqirus’ production of antivenom, we have been saving Australian lives since the 1960s. This is compliments to the Australian Government over the years by making the administering of antivenom free in Australia.”

In addition to providing a lifesaving community service, the Australian Reptile Park is a multi-award-winning wildlife tourism operator, winning Gold for the ‘Best Major Tourist Attraction in Australia’ at the 2023 Australian Tourism Awards. The park provides vital jobs to Central Coast locals and attracts over 300,000 visitors to the region each year.
