Our Zookeeper Volunteer Program is back!

Date Published: February 1, 2024

The Australian Reptile Park, renowned for its commitment to wildlife conservation and education, is thrilled to announce the recommencement of its highly sought-after zookeeper volunteer program. This opportunity is designed to serve as a steppingstone for passionate TAFE and university students currently or previously enrolled in Animal Care or Wildlife and Exhibited Animal Care courses, or zoology-specific university courses, who are seeking to build a rewarding career within the zoological industry and become the next generation of zookeepers!

With a rich history spanning over 70 years, the Australian Reptile Park has been at the forefront of wildlife preservation and education on the beautiful Central Coast of New South Wales. Recognising the importance of hands-on experience in shaping the future of zookeeping, the park has tailored this volunteer program to provide TAFE and university students with invaluable practical knowledge and skills.

“We are excited to relaunch our volunteer program, offering studying students a unique opportunity to gain real-world experience in a renowned zoological facility. Being a part of our volunteer program is an excellent way to blend theory and hands-on experience together,” said Hayley Shute, Life Sciences Manager of the Australian Reptile Park.

The program will offer participants a comprehensive learning experience, covering a wide range of areas within the zoological field. Under the guidance of experienced zookeepers, volunteers will have the chance to work closely with a diverse range of reptiles, mammals, and other fascinating creatures. From assisting with animal husbandry and enrichment activities to participating in educational presentations, volunteers will gain hands-on experience in various aspects of animal care and conservation.

“Our aim is to foster a new generation of zookeepers who are not only well-versed in theory but also possess the practical skills necessary to excel in their careers and become amazing zookeepers,” Ms Shute concluded.
